NAIDOC matters at Riverstone

NAIDOC events happened around the country this week between 2-9 July 2017 and Riverstone Neighbourhood Centre’s celebration on 4 July was a successful mix of entertainment, education, and fun.

The NAIDOC theme this year was ‘Our language Matters’ – aimed to emphasise and celebrate the unique and essential role that Indigenous languages play.

Highlights from the day included traditional dancers, smoking ceremony, bush tucker and for the kids the inflatable obstacle course, mechanical bull and of course Playvan.

Playvan is a mobile supported playgroup for all children aged 0 to 6, as well as providing support to the most important people in their lives – the parents and carers. We’re committed to supporting Aboriginal communities and community events such as those run by the Riverstone Neighbourhood Centre, and were delighted to be part of the celebration.

On the day, we setup similarly to how we would a regular playgroup, activities included; a mini obstacle course with tubes, a slide, spinning chairs and building blocks. These activities are specifically designed to develop gross motor skills such as strength, balance, and coordination.

The Playvan team are Early Childhood trained and know every child is different, and we ensure everyone feels included. If you have concerns about any area of your child’s development then we can, alongside our Growing Early Minds service, provide helpful information and resources, identify if any short or long term early intervention is required as well as provide those services.

Playvan visits Blacktown, Riverstone and Plumpton every week. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact us.
