NSW Minister visits Ngallu Wal

The Hon. Brad Hazzard, Minister for Family and Community Services, visited the Ngallu Wal Aboriginal Child and Family Centre in Doonside in Western Sydney on Thursday 17th December.

The Minister mingled with members of the local community and its elders. He also met members of the Ngallu Wal Advisory Board and Centre staff.

Ngallu Wal is an Aboriginal Child and Family Centre with a passion to help build stronger Aboriginal families by providing tailored services in childcare, youth, family and educational support appropriate to the area. All aspects of the service ensure that culture is front and centre in all activities in accordance with the wishes of the local Aboriginal community. The Centre is co-ordinated by a consortia that includes Childrenfirst as the lead agency and Yawarra as the operator of the childcare licence.

The centre runs a Youth Hope Initiative, a number of community groups including a yarning circle, a Koori Dance Group, women’s collective, men’s and kids clubs, co-ordinates two local playgroups and provides case management support to over 20 families each month.

In 2014 the centre received the ZEST outstanding project working with Aboriginal communities in greater Western Sydney award and in 2015m was selected to present two abstracts at the Secretariat for National Aboriginal and Islander Child Care (SNAICC) Conference in Perth.
